I haven't tried this yet! I will.

1) BlackScreen.exe needs Adminrights. Sometimes giving it XP SP2 Compa mode helps too.

I have tried every compatibility mode on builds, betas, rcs & retail versions of both vista & windows 7 on 3 different computers. I have tried everything under the sun ... except the blackscreen.exe thing! I learned to just deal with the crashes long ago. I mean the game is like 16yrs old isnt it!?
