Animation "template" skeletons for Gmax

So I've tried to do my own weapon-animations for BF42. The problem is that I can't animate the weapon handling animations because there is no way to open the .max files found in the BF MDT with Gmax. (.max-files are meant for 3dsmax)

Does someone have a .gmax-conversions of the files or can someone give me tips how to open them?

I don't have enough money for 3dsmax but I don't want to illegally download it either. (I'm mostly against pirating software)
