3dsmax 7: Can't export models

Post by exe »

Hello everyone,

since I couldn't find any answers through google I decided to register here. :)

I'm a beginner to modelling so it could be just a minor thing that I simply can't see.
I use 3dsmax 7 with MDT 2.75 @Win7 64bit.
For the start I use this tutorial but I'm stuck already. When I export the model it just doesn't create a .sm file but there is no error message either so I don't know what I do wrong.

1. I pick the model that I want to export and use the options from the tutorial. Look at the header of the export tool, it says Ver 2.52, is that the right one?

2. I choose to overwrite the existing .sm file (as suggested in the tutorial).

3. Somehow it didn't save because it's still the old file (see date). The old .rs file was overwritten though.

I hope that I'm just dumb and made a nooby mistake.

Thanks all!

Can you try and export a simple box from max to test?
Export should be fine. On a train at the moment but any max related issues will get answered here for sure. Welcome to the site.

Thanks for your quick replies. :)

I tried your suggestions but sadly it didn't change anything. I always use administrator rights with 3dsmax and also ran it with different compatibility modes, that didn't help either.

Make sure these boxes are checked:

- Use object names for export
- Auto generate LODs (6)
- BSP Optimization

Don't bother having simple shader checked.
I never use the 'use object names' either.. Or auto gen lod for that matter. But for sure bsp should be checked.

One thing I notice is that your object is editable poly. Convert to or just add an 'editable mesh' modifier. This is most likely the issue.... Hopefully :)

I hate to say it again but still no change. Is there any other way to make a model Bf1942 compatible? Maybe a different plugin?

Make a video. Show us what you're doing.

First, in your recording, show us the 3D model and its format [poly, mesh, etc] and stuff like that. Then show the steps your are taking when exporting.
There's not much we can do if you're trying to explain this through text.

[Edit] Saw the last picture in the first post. Sometimes it won't bother changing the RS file is you didn't edit the textures in any way. If you only edited the 3D model's shape, it'll only save over that file.

I recorded a video but I'm not sure if it contains everything you need. I use the Colt model from Vanilla Battlefield 1942 but I also tried it with others.

But when I save it with a new name it should create it no matter what, shouldn't it?
