For servers, it's always good to have strong hardware so that it can deal with the weight of the processing. Kind of like business servers that have 12 CPUs and 20 GB of RAM, but a smaller version for home that has four to eight logical processors. If you have a little dual-core processor, the server might get hung up because of the low processing power. You can try it, but I wouldn't expect great results. I think the most important part is your network connection and router though.

yes you can
my first "server" was a celeron 400MHz on a 8/0.8 ADSL connection, it could manage something like 12-14 players before it croaked

Would anyone here fancy hosting the server for a week or two while I set up with friends how to do this? It would help if you were in france/germany/UK.. or the east coast of the US.
