How to Add Custom Fonts in Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam

10/31/04

Requirements:

- MDT tools version 2.75 or higher.

Unpacking the Font.rfa

1. If you haven't already done so, copy the Font.rfa file from "Mods>bf1942>Archives" to "Mods>My_Mod>Archives.

2. Launch the MDT toolkit and click the WinRFA button.

3. In the WinRFA tool, select File>Open.

4. Navigate to the Font.rfa file in "Mods>My_Mod>Archives." and open it.

5. Select Extract>all and navigate to "Mods>My_Mod" and click okay. (Not Mods>MyMod>Archives)

If you did everything correctly, you should now see something like the following folder structure:

6. Close WinRFA.

7. Back in the MDT Tools main screen, click on the button labeled "Show All Tools.

8. This should open up a window showing the folders containing additional tools that don't have buttons on the main MDT Tool page.

9. Double-click on the "FontMaker" folder and then again on "FontMakerEx.exe" to launch the tool.

You should now see this:

10. In this window, select the font that you want to use. Select any additional options you want, such as color, size, and so on, and click "Okay".

Note: the font you want to use must already be installed on your system. Additionally, it must be a TrueType or openType font to work. You can tell which ones these are by the "TT" or "O" to the left of the name.

11. Once you hit "Okay" navigate to your Font folder ("Mods>My_Mod>Font") and save.

12. Now that you've saved the new font, navigate to "Mods>MyMod>Archives" and double-click on "PackRFA.exe".

13. Select the "Font" folder and click "Pack Folder".

You now have the new font packed into your Font.rfa and ready to use in the game.

Using the new font in the game

You now have the new font ready to go, but you still need to tell the game where and when to use it. This is done in the Menu.rfa's. See the menu editing tutorials for information, but basically look for the lines that start with "FontString:..."

In this case, "Latin.dif" is the font currently being used. Replace this with the name of your font, save, repack your Menu.rfa, and you're ready to go.
